People give dogs too much credit for pre-meditating their actions. They believe that dogs are more like humans than they really are. A dog doesn’t do things out of spite or because they are angry at you. The reality is that dogs don’t have a spiteful bone in their body. They don’t have the ability to be vindictive (i.e. they don’t wait until you leave to poop somewhere, just to anger you).
Dogs also have a very, very short-term memory, which is why you must catch them in the act in order to alter their behavior. When a dog has an accident and you rub their nose in it an hour later, they have no idea why you are doing it and therefore repeat the behavior.
Similarly, placing a dog in a crate is not negative to a new dog. They feel comfort and can relax in their familiar surroundings. Like a baby in a crib… a dog likes the comfort of knowing there is a boundary on all sides protecting them.
